Jubilee Centre, Zambia report on a exciting development with Junior Parliament (JP):

At the invitation of Youth Parliament of Seychelles, five youths from the Chifubu Network of Churches are heading to Seychelles for an exchange program with the Youth Parliament of that country this Monday. The Junior Parliament started 3 years ago by churches in Chifubu, with support from Jubilee Centre, a Christian organization which empowers churches and communities to grow spiritually, flourish physically and have a voice in the world.  The program runs in collaboration with the area Member of Parliament for Chifubu Constituency to provide critical learning skills to Junior Parliament in order to bring about positive change in churches, schools and communities.

The JP involves youths from ages 15 to 23 working together as a team to address the social, economic, academic and environmental concerns in their community.  Through the Jubilee Centre support, the young people are being mentored by a lawyer, a medical doctor, a social worker,  a pastor and the Member of Parliament for Chifubu Constituency who are providing them with toolkits that show them how to identify challenges and solutions. They recently received input from students from Cambridge University who recently visited Zambia. The JP are being trained to follow up step-by-step the government funded projects in their Constituency related to health, education and other social amenities to see how funds have been disbursed and used. The JP then calls for a public meeting at which they debate how the resources were used and the impact of the work that has been done.

The topics that have been addressed at public meetings include, use of constituency funds; Health services for PLWHA; and Quality education for vulnerable children. Because of these debates Pamodzi saw the completion of the Police Post, Chipota Mayamba Clinic saw a midwifery nurse deployed to it and 100 trees planted in schools. Pastor Lawrence Temfwe, the Director of Jubilee Centre stated, “The goal of JP is to produce Christian statesmen like Daniel or Joseph.” Bishop David Ngona paid tribute to the current and former MP for Chifubu for supporting this creative initiative. “We are grateful and  encouraged by the support we received from Hon. Kawandami during her tenure. Hon. Ngambi has attended the two debates and has contributed immensely in helping them gain confidence in their leadership abilities”

The trip has been made possible with the support of Tearfund of UK, Wheaton College of USA and various individuals.  While in Seychelles the team will showcase the impact of JP in Chifubu. They will be hosted by the Youth Parliament of Seychelles who have arranged for Chifubu JP to conduct workshops for various youth groups. They will also hold meetings with the Permanent Secretary of Youth and the pastor of Assemblies of God in Seychelles. “The entire program will be recorded and aired on Seychelles television. I am so excited that these young people have this opportunity to enhance their leadership abilities” stated Mr. Lameck Kaonga, the head of youth and children program at Jubilee Centre.
